“You never really understand a person until you consider things from his point of view...until you climb inside of his skin and walk around in it.” —Harper Lee
Welcome to Issue 7!
Hello and welcome to It’s Kismet, a weekly curated list of art, holistic health content, and thoughts I felt were worth sharing with more people.
This week I have thought a lot about ageing and what it means in our lives. I mean, most of our communities aren’t terrible accessible for the ageing and the old, most people don’t care about those who are growing old (look at the lack of technology focusing on seniors), and we definitely don’t celebrate age (Hello, would you like a side of Ageism with your entré?) Why is that? Every decade of life is filled with lessons and experiences. Every generation gets to witness the magical innovations of science and the beauty of life and the world, but our societies only focus on what value a person can bring to others in their youth. Older people are not seen as beautiful (unless they don’t “look their age”), as innovative (because they’re ‘behind on tech’), or as smart (because we see their brains as ‘deteriorating.’)
A friend of mine shared an article with me about ageing (available to read in this issue if you scroll down), that speaks to how important advocacy for and realities of ageing. Age might be just a number but research says how we think about ageing actually makes a difference. I know the study is old (circa 2010) but it’s still a kick for each of us to advocate for ageing as a whole and an important thought experiment for each person to do on their own. Ageing is inevitable and a major player in our holistic health so…how do you actually think about ageing? Do you value it or is it a burden? Has social media made it worse? – Lili

💭 Food for Thought
Aging can be tough → We should fight for ourselves as we grow older
“A common cliché is that you are only as old as you feel, but that is oversimplifying. Certainly, we make our own choices about who we become, but we are also defined from the outside – by other people, societies and situations that surround us. We can discover some aspects of our being by looking in the mirror and introspection, but there is a dimension that only others can see and which remains, for each of us, unrealisable.”
